Matthew Paul Mazanek

Bio

Dr Matthew Paul Mazanek is a classical guitarist, academic and educator whose research currently explores improvisation in the nineteenth century and its applications in contemporary music making.

 

As a performer he specialises in contemporary classical music and has performed throughout the UK, Europe and North America on classical and electric guitar, mandolin, and banjo. His wider practice embraces a diverse background spanning the classical tradition, rock, jazz, traditional/folk, experimental and free improvisation.

 

Matthew's research has appeared in edited collections, and he has presented his research at conferences in the US, the UK and EU. He maintains scholarly and professional interests in the traditional music of Britain and Ireland and the experimental/avant-garde traditions of the late twentieth century.

 

Matthew joined the teaching faculty of Bath Spa University in 2024. He previously taught as a Lecturer in Music at the University of Lincoln and was a teaching fellow at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. He earned his Doctor of Music Performance from the Royal Irish Academy.
